Camp Red Cedar boasts 57 acres of woods, meadows, trails, a 10-acre lake and sandy beach.  Each year the camp serves hundreds of children and adults through inclusive summer camps, recreational therapy and riding programs, and community events.

Camp Red Cedar is looking for a Riding Instructor to work as needed on nights + weekends in the Fort Wayne, IN area.

The Riding Instructor will provide professional equestrian instructions and leadership to students of all ages and abilities. Adapt instruction and equipment to suit each individual rider’s needs and include mounted and unmounted instruction. Include riders in all aspects of preparing a horse for mounted activities, including retrieving the horse from the stall, grooming, and tacking.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach mounted and un-mounted, high-quality, goal-oriented, interactive, progressive, and safe riding lessons
  • Responsible for lesson preparation, ensuring that the horse is properly prepared, is in good health and capable of participating
  • Ensure riding equipment is in safe and good repair, and that the physical environment is safe, clean, and free of any hazard.
  • Develop and execute lessons and horsemanship activities following PATH standards and builds horsemanship and independent skills
  • Teach participants to communicate with their horse.
  • Supervise students at all times during their lesson.
  • Maintain regular participant logs, goal documentation, and lesson notes.
  • Communicate with parents as needed concerning their participant’s goals, and progress
  • Communicate in a positive, professional, respectful manner
  • Maintain horse use log and conditioning notes as directed by the Barn Manager.
  • Communicate with supervisor and team members about horse needs and scheduling changes for lessons, when necessary.
  • Organize equipment and teach animal care responsibilities.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Direct volunteers in a positive, respectful manner before, during, and after lessons and empower volunteers to provide the best possible experience for participants.
  • Assist in maintaining orderly stalls, barns, office space, equipment and arena.
  • Engage in annual performance reviews and continuing education opportunities.
  • Continually innovate and streamline processes and procedures.
  • Attend all meetings, including quarterly mandatory meetings; training sessions; and facility improvement days.
  • Comply with all standards to assure the health and safety of all staff and participants we serve.
  • Be aware of and submit reportable incidents within required timeframes including: accidents, any suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation
  • Be familiar with all emergency procedures and participate in monthly drills.
  • Maintain employment required documentation (Current D.L. auto insurance, certification (i.e., First Aid, CPR, Medication Administration, MANDT, etc.), and training (OSHA, Abuse & Neglect, etc.)
  • Be a good role model for students, staff, co-workers, and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate good communication and organizational skills, sound judgement, initiative, and dependability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • In depth horse knowledge and experience: prefer a minimum of 3 years riding experience.
  • CHA Certification, PATH, Intl Certification preferred
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Ability to work outside in a barn atmosphere for up to 10 hours a day.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Must be safety conscious
