Tacey Dunwoody has 14 years of experience working in case management. She holds a bachelor’s degree in human services, with a minor in sociology from Black Hills State University. Dunwoody served as a case manager, SPED director, admissions coordinator, outreach program director, and human rights/positive support committee chair for Northern Hills Training Center in Spearfish, South Dakota before joining Benchmark. She is a certified person centered thinking coach, and is crisis prevention intervention certified.


Laura Wendland

Laura Wendland has 18 years of experience in case management and 21 years’ experience working in the field of intellectual disabilities. She began her career at Black Hills Special Services in 1995.  In 1996, Wendland began working at Northern Hills Training Center where she was the director of service coordination for 13 years.  She is a certified quality analyst with the Council on Quality and Leadership, is a certified person centered thinking trainer, and is trained in the investigations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation and crisis intervention.  Wendland holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in drug and alcohol studies from the University of South Dakota.

Hilary Boam has worked with people with disabilities for more than five years. She worked in special education classrooms in both Utah and South Dakota, and spent a year working as a direct support professional for Black Hills Works.  She recently began working in case management through an internship program. Hilary holds an associate’s degree in Human Services and Criminal Justice from San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico. She graduated in December, with a double major in Human Services and Sociology from Black Hills State University. Hilary said, “As a DSP, I was a very strong advocate of helping the people I supported to meet their goals. I look forward to being more involved in this new position.”

Bob Burke comes to Benchmark with 14 years of case management experience. He worked with the Boy’s Health Program and the Fatherhood Program at Youth and Family Services, was a Prevention Educator and Drug and Alcohol Counselor at Lifeways, INC, and worked as a case manager for Adult Services and Aging at the Department of Social Services. He graduated from Black Hills State University with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science.


Sharon Culbertson

Sharon Culbertson has over 40 years of experience in Supervision and Case Management.  Sharon was employed with the Department of Social Services, working in both Economic Assistance and Adult Service for 36 years.  She then spent 4 years as a social worker for Spearfish Regional Home +/ Home Health and Hospice.  Sharon has a bachelor’s degree from BHSU in Spearfish.  She has belonged to several community boards and groups and is currently Vice Chair of the Artemis House Board (local women’s shelter).  She is also on the Health Ministry Team through the United Methodist Church in Spearfish.

Kaylene Danielson holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and minor in Sociology.  In 1998, Kaylene started at NHTC working in the group home for at least two years then went to working in Community Support Program until 2001.  In 2003, Kaylene came back to work at NHTC in the Community Support Program where she assisted in establishing a new community program and became the first supervisor.  Kaylene later became a Service Coordinator.  She holds certifications in CPI and Person Centered Thinking.


Lana Giannonatti

Lana has ten years of case management experience with seven years in vocational rehabilitation counseling and three years in child protection services. Lana is currently a certified rehabilitation counselor. She holds bachelor’s degrees in Human Services and Sociology from Black Hills State University and a master’s degree in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from South Dakota State University. She previously specialized in working with disabled youth transitioning to adulthood to gain independence.

Cassie Krebs has four years of case management experience ranging from counseling to child protection. She worked with individuals at the Artemis House in Spearfish, SD, where she learned a lot about domestic abuse and how to assist victims. Cassie also provided counseling services to a wide variety of students at Black Hills State University, before spending two years at Child Protection in Rapid City, protecting and assisting a vulnerable population. She holds bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Sociology from Black Hills State University, and a master’s degree in Counseling from South Dakota State University. Cassie says she is excited to work for Benchmark. “I love being a part of each individual’s team and having the ability to make sure that all of their needs are being met and that they are thriving!”

Pat Lien-Francis has 30+ years of experience in case management. She worked for the South Dakota Department of Social Services working with elderly and disabled individuals assisting them to achieve their highest level of independence. Pat holds a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Northern State University.

Kelli Leitner has eight years of case management experience and has served for 15 years in the field of intellectual disabilities. Kelli hold a bachelor’s degree in human services with a minor in political science from Black Hills State University. She started as a direct support professional at Black Hills Special Services in 1997. Kelli began working for Northern Hills Training Center in 2004, as a direct support supervisor. Later in 2008, she began working as a case manager for Northern Hills Training Center. Kelli is a person centered thinking trainer, certified interviewer for the Council Quality of Leadership, a level 2 certified Special Olympics coach, and she has completed the intensive training for Positive Approaches Institute with David Pitonyak.

Lisa Lotz has spent nearly three years working as a case manager for Black Hills Works. She has served as a special education teaching assistant for grades 9-12, and as the office administration assistant for the Psychological Testing and Counseling Center.  Lotz has completed 120+ CEUs in human service based topics.  She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology. Lotz is CPI certified, is a person centered coach, and has her ASIST suicide prevention certification.

Sarah Robbins has worked for Northern Hills Training Center in Spearfish, South Dakota since 2004. She worked for seven years as a direct support professional, two years as a direct support supervisor, and two and a half years as a service coordinator. Sarah attended Black Hills State University and obtained a bachelor’s degree, majoring in human services and sociology. Sarah is a person centered thinking coach and certified in crisis prevention intervention.

Karri Saathoff has 15 years of case management experience.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of South Dakota. Saathoff started her career as a case manager at Black Hills Works before taking on the position of admissions coordinator. A highlight of that position was helping children and their families make the transition from school to adult services.   Prior to joining Benchmark, Saathoff worked as a registered behavior therapist at Behavior Care Specialists.

Kristi Scherr began her career as a residential direct support professional with Black Hills Works, before serving as a case manager for 9 years with Northern Hills Training Center.  She is a person-centered thinking trainer, and is trained in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI).  Scherr holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in psychology from Black Hills State University.

Lexi Sorlie holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Science and a minor in Psychology from the University of South Dakota. Upon her graduation in 2012, she worked for one year as a receptionist at a drug and alcohol treatment center. Lexi later moved to the Spearfish area and worked as a direct support professional at Northern Hills Training Center. She has also served as a job coach for a crew at the Rec and Aquatics Center. In January 2016, Lexi became a Service Coordinator.  She is Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certified.

Kathy Staton has 20 years of experience working in case management. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Services, with a minor in Sociology from Black Hills State University. Staton served as both Case Manager and Admission’s Director for Black Hills Works in Rapid City. She was also the coordinator for Money Follows the Person for Western South Dakota. She is a graduate of the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities at the University of Delaware and is an advocate for person centered practices.


Melissa Martin-Schwarz

Melissa Martin-Schwarz has 12 years of experience working as a service coordinator/case manager for Black Hills Works (BHWS) in Rapid City, South Dakota. She started her career at BHWS as a direct support professional working in a residential setting.  Throughout her time there, she served on many different committees including CQL, transportation, PCT, and best practices. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and public relations from Montana State University, Bozeman, MT.  Martin-Schwarz says the best part of her day is seeing an individual use the plan he/she developed to reach goals and live a happy, healthy life.

Janet Swanson has over 34 years of experience working in case management. She attained her BA in Human Resources with a Community Emphasis from Black Hills State University with a minor in Sociology. She also received a BA in Social Work from Oglala Lakota College and an AA in Child Development and Science from Presentation College. Janet has served 24 years at Black Hills Works, five years at Golden Living Center as a Social Worker, and five years at Lutheran Social Services, among other field related positions. She has trained as a Life Skills Instructor and has experience with behavior management, trauma informed care, American Sign Language, and suicide prevention.

Alison Yackley started working with individuals with intellectual disabilities in 2006 at Northern Hills Training Center as a Direct Support Professional. In 2009, she became a Direct Support Supervisor, and in 2012, a Service Coordinator. Alison graduated from the University of Phoenix with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. She is a Person Centered Thinking Coach, Crisis Prevention Intervention certified, and a volunteer firefighter.
