Diversity and Inclusion at Benchmark Human Services

In the spring of 2020, as the Black Lives Matter movement arose as a powerful agent of change after years of struggle to be recognized, it added fuel to a fire that has been burning within Benchmark. We are home to an incredibly diverse group of employees supporting an equally diverse group of individuals. While we have been working for some time on incorporating diversity awareness training and a diversity plan for our leadership team, it felt like it was just plodding along. We know the fight for justice and equality for all marginalized people is not new. But the momentum that came as a result of the protests surrounding the egregious murder of George Floyd and countless others gave Benchmark leadership the push it needed to deeply examine our structures and begin to enact meaningful change. An internal Diversity Committee was formed and the group has been actively working to develop a strategic plan that prioritizes equity and inclusion.

We realize we have much to learn – and far to go, but we are fiercely committed to these initiatives and to being an organization that reflects the diverse make-up of those on our team, in our care, and in the communities we serve.

Our Vision

Our vision is to create a diverse and equitable environment where individuals of all backgrounds and experiences have a voice and participate in making decisions that help Benchmark Human Services fulfill its mission to drive person-centered outcomes for individuals served.

We will work toward this vision in the following ways:

1. Recruit and hire a workforce reflective of the diversity that exists in the multitude of communities Benchmark serves; Provide opportunities for all to advance in the company; Diversify the leadership of Benchmark
2. Articulate our Diversity & Inclusion progress through proactive communications
3. Regulate and manage workplace equality and fairness

 


Inclusive Language Guide
Benchmark has developed an inclusive language guide to help educate and guide Benchmark staff on ways to use language that shows respect and is free of stereotypes, prejudice, discriminatory views, or bias. You can view the guide here: Inclusive Language Guide 2022.
